The Vermeer LS3600TX low speed shredder was built to provide numerous waste processing benefits.
Ability to shred contaminated raw materials. Fewer fines in mulch and soil products. Additional revenue opportunities for operators.
“We went out and asked competitive owners before we designed this machine: ‘What do you like about your machine? What do you not like about it?’ And most importantly, ‘What would you change about what you don’t like?’” Vermeer Product Specialist Curtis Van Der Wal said.
That led to another major benefit: Market-leading ease of maintenance.
The LS3600TX is hard to rival in that regard. It offers operators full rotor access, engine bay access and a belly conveyor that can be serviced quickly. As a result, daily maintenance on the Vermeer low speed shredder can take a fraction of the time it takes on competing machines.
That includes quick access to the oil filter, grease points and the air filter.
“It stacks up extremely well output-wise versus our competitors,” Van Der Wal said.
Let’s explain how.
Low speed shredder maintenance: Engine bay access
LS3600TX operators have unparalleled access to the engine bay. It provides multiple ladder points, large access doors and a spacious service platform.
“Our engineers did a phenomenal job giving greater access to inspect it,” said Ted Dirkx, a Vermeer sales manager in Recycling and Forestry, “and keep the machines running healthy.”
Uptime is critical when processing waste materials. Each moment that the machine is not operating is a loss of revenue. That’s why a maintenance-friendly design is critical.
“When we make that maintenance easier for the operator, not only is it more likely to get done but it’s also done quicker,” Van Der Wal said. “If we can make that easier and quicker for an operator to perform maintenance on a machine, they are able to operate the machine longer.”
Low speed shredder ease of use: Serviceable belly conveyor
The belly conveyor on low speed shredders come in contact with all sorts of jagged and sharp materials — mufflers, branches, construction and demolition debris and more.
But until the LS3600TX, servicing a damaged belly conveyor could be a major chore.
“That belly belt takes a lot of abuse, and we’re proud to be the first manufacturer that allows you to completely remove the belly belt cartridge while keeping the discharge conveyor on the machine,” Dirkx said. “In the event of a belly belt rip because of some ugly piece of material puncturing it and ripping it, we can pull that out and have it back to work a lot quicker than some of our competitors.”
The ability to remove the belly conveyor without removing the discharge conveyor is a major advantage that the LS3600TX has over other low speed shredders.
“Some competitors don’t allow you to remove the belly belt cartridge, and others that do require you to remove the entire stacking conveyor,” Dirkx said. “It’s a lot more time-consuming and cumbersome.”
That means potentially less downtime when servicing damaged belly conveyors.
“That’s something that’s very unique in the market,” Van Der Wal said.
Low speed shredder maintenance advantage: Quick rotor access
A low speed shredder rotor is another workhorse.
“With the nature of a shredder processing highly contaminated materials, the health and condition of that rotor is critical,” Dirkx said. “To maintain and have confidence in what that rotor is doing, given the abuse it’s going through, checking it regularly is key.”
Not a problem on the LS3600TX. The rotor access area was designed to let operators check tips, torque and reconfigure teeth, and adjust comb settings, among other tasks, quickly and without any overhead obstructions.
“What our engineers have done … is an operator can quickly be at the control station, open the comb access door and inspect that rotor for a loose bolt, a missing bolt, a missing rotor tip that could cause more significant downtime or performance loss,” Dirkx said.
Given all this, perhaps now maintaining low speed shredders won’t feel like such a chore.
“Because it’s so fluid and quick, we believe operators are going to be more likely to do this required maintenance,” Dirkx said.
