When severe weather strikes, having the right equipment can mean the difference between efficient recovery and prolonged cleanup efforts. Clean Scapes Landscaping, a 100% employee-owned landscaping contractor serving multiple Texas markets, has discovered the perfect solution in their fleet of Vermeer ATX compact articulated loaders.
Facing multiple storm challenges
Texas faced numerous severe weather events in 2024, testing the capabilities of landscaping contractors throughout the region. For Greg Fox, arbor director at Clean Scapes, these challenges highlighted the importance of having versatile, reliable equipment.
“We faced two major weather events — a derecho in April and Hurricane Beryl later in the year,” Fox explained. “Each situation required quick response while being mindful of property damage. We needed equipment that could handle massive cleanup efforts while protecting sensitive surfaces.”

Equipment strategy evolved through experience
Clean Scapes’ journey with Vermeer ATX loaders began during another severe weather event when manual handling methods proved insufficient. “We had a major ice storm where we lost 35% to 40% of our tree canopy in just two days,” Fox recalled. “It was like a hurricane and tornado hit simultaneously.”
The experience led them to invest in their first Vermeer ATX530 compact articulated loader, which Fox described as “a lifesaver.” As their operations grew, they added the larger ATX720 loader to their fleet, providing even more capability while maintaining the maneuverability needed for sensitive areas.
Versatility meets precision
These Vermeer ATX compact loaders have proven particularly valuable when working in areas requiring special consideration, such as golf courses and parks. “We wouldn’t have been able to do these jobs without our ATX loaders,” Fox emphasized. “The turf-friendly tires and superior maneuverability allowed us to complete projects that would have been impossible with traditional equipment.”

The loader’s versatility extends beyond storm cleanup. “You could start using high-walled trailers where you might not be able to with a skid,” Fox noted. “ATX loaders have that reach that you just drop it right in.” This flexibility has transformed their daily operations, from loading chipper trucks to managing material in tight spaces.
Moving from manual to mechanized
Before acquiring their first ATX loader, Clean Scapes relied heavily on manual methods for material handling. “It was just cutting it up and hauling it out with tree dollies, wheelbarrows, whatever might be available,” Fox recalled. This approach not only strained workers physically but also limited the company’s efficiency during large-scale cleanup operations.
The transition to mechanized handling began with their first ATX loader, but the company quickly realized they needed specialized equipment for different scenarios. “We needed machines with turf tires for specialized work like golf course cleanup,” Fox explained. This led to strategic equipment choices that would maximize versatility while minimizing ground damage.

Equipment deployment during emergencies
The true value of the ATX loaders became evident during severe weather events like Hurricane Beryl. Clean Scapes used their fleet strategically to clear critical infrastructure first, with the machines’ precision allowing them to work around buildings and in tight spaces.
“The ATX loaders were essential for rapid response,” Fox explained. “Their maneuverability meant we could quickly clear blocked driveways and access roads while protecting the underlying surfaces. Having the right equipment let us assess and address urgent needs across affected areas much more efficiently than traditional methods would allow.”
Outstanding service and support
For Clean Scapes, the relationship with the Vermeer Texas-Louisiana team has been crucial to their success. During the Houston cleanup efforts, the dealer’s proactive support made a significant difference. “They were ordering, they were sending, it was just smooth. I didn’t even have to ask,” Fox recalled.
The dealer’s commitment extends to training and ongoing support. “I do quarterly training with all our team members and managers on proper maintenance and usage,” Fox explained. “Anytime I’ve asked, we’ve had somebody there at our training doing shop talk. Everything they’re doing, especially this Round Rock branch, has been extremely over the top.”
Maximizing equipment versatility
Clean Scapes maintains both the ATX520 and ATX720 in their fleet to handle a wide range of applications. “The ATX520 is perfect for really tight areas,” Fox noted. “It gives us more flexibility to get into tight courtyards or other situations where the larger machine would be right on the verge.”
The ATX720, with its increased stability and capability, complements the smaller unit perfectly. “It can do everything the ATX520 can do and then some,” Fox explained. “Having both machines means we can handle essentially anything that comes our way in Austin.”
