How Vermeer ATX compact articulated loaders deliver turf-friendly landscaping equipment solutions

Vermeer ATX720

For tree care and landscape professionals, every job requires surface-safe equipment that navigates tight spaces without damaging client lawns.

While compact articulated loaders have become essential tools in this environment, the Vermeer ATX compact articulated loader line is specifically engineered to provide practical answers to everyday contractor challenges – from material handling to precise placement work.

Here are the ways ATX compact articulated loaders solve critical jobsite problems while protecting valuable turf.

Why contractors choose compact articulated loaders

The rising preference for compact articulated loaders stems from their capacity to meet essential jobsite needs. This equipment category is experiencing growth similar to mini track loaders a decade ago, according to Trevor Koolmees, product group sales manager at Vermeer.

Contractors are consistently “looking for solutions to get into tight areas, not disturbing the ground,” he explained. They need equipment that delivers full-size loader performance without leaving a trail of torn-up turf and unhappy customers.

That’s exactly where the ATX line fits. Vermeer has deep roots in tree care and landscaping, and the ATX line reflects this focus on supporting contractors in this space.

How ATX compact articulated loaders solve contractor challenges

ATX compact articulated loaders are designed with specific features that directly tackle daily obstacles, boosting efficiency and operational flexibility:

  • Versatility for multitask jobsites: These loaders function as true “multi-tools.” With a universal attachment plate and standard North American auxiliary hydraulics, they can easily switch between tasks such as moving dirt, handling materials and performing tree or landscaping work. As a result, contractors can bring fewer machines to the jobsite, streamline their equipment inventory and quickly adapt to different project needs.

The Vermeer ATX530 has proven valuable for various applications at Red River Outdoor Living, as Ross Moore explained:

We use the Vermeer ATX for many different tasks. For example, when setting small boulders, we can extend the boom out and place them down in the beds or even boom them across sidewalks to the beds between the sidewalk and the house. It also comes in handy for loading stuff over a taller trailer or truck.”

  • Impressive lift-to-weight ratio: The ATX line delivers substantial lifting capability without excessive weight. “The machines are also relatively light compared to how much they can lift,” Koolmees noted. This provides easier transportation and lower ground pressure for sensitive turf protection.

Wes Alseth of Red Oak Landscaping & Design, who upgraded to the ATX850 after finding his previous equipment too limited, highlighted the transformative impact of its capabilities

“The turf tires on the articulated loader, its turning radius and all the different attachments just made sense. I am on that machine sometimes for hours every day. Just having the ability to sit down was a nice feature… The power that thing has is amazing. On one project, the crew used the ATX850 to reach on top of a berm that was surrounded by edging to drill a hole for a tree. Just being able to do things like that is priceless when you are on a jobsite because the efficiency is so much better. There is satisfaction showing up with the right piece of equipment. You have the confidence to get everything done and the efficiency is great.”

  • Turf-friendly landscaping equipment for sensitive sites: The combination of articulated steering and a hydrostatic drive system operating in a smooth, free-flowing manner for tight turns without damaging turf, along with various tire options and lighter weight, helps preserve established lawns and landscapes. This turf-friendly landscaping equipment enables contractors to work more confidently and helps reduce the risk of costly rework.

Greg Fox, Director of the Arborist Division at Clean Scapes Landscaping, emphasized how their ATX loaders address this critical need, especially when working on sensitive commercial properties and golf courses

“We evaluated various options, including traditional skid steers. But working on finished surfaces, especially golf courses and high-end commercial properties, required different solutions. That led us to test the ATX720 with turf tires… A tracked machine might lift more, but surface damage requires multiple follow-up visits for power washing. That impacts both efficiency and client satisfaction. The reach and maneuverability transformed our material handling. With high-walled trailers, the compact articulated loader’s reach lets us place material precisely.”

Choosing the right ATX compact articulated loader for your operation

The ATX lineup includes four models, allowing contractors to choose equipment that best meets their operational scale and jobsite challenges. “We’re really trying to ask as many qualifying questions as we can to understand that customer’s business, making sure that our salespeople that are interacting with our customers are really trying to understand what problem the customer’s trying to solve,” Koolmees explained.

Here’s how each ATX model meets distinct contractor requirements:

  • ATX530 (25 hp / 18.6 kW): The most compact model offers 1343 lb (609.2 kg) rated operating capacity. “Its smaller size makes it a great solution for people who are in bigger cities or concerned about the size of jobsites,” Koolmees said. Key benefit: 13.2 gpm (50 L/min) auxiliary hydraulic flow, ideal for hydraulic attachments like flail mowers and power rakes that demand continuous hydraulic power.
  • ATX720 (25 hp / 18.6 kW): Provides increased 1917 lb (869.5 kg) rated operating capacity with 9.2 gpm (34.8 L/min) hydraulic flow. “It’s really geared toward material handling, moving whether it’s pallet to saw or trees or landscape material,” Koolmees clarified.
  • ATX850 (57 hp / 42.5 kW): Built for demanding applications with 2517 lb (1141.7 kg) capacity and 20 gpm (75.7 L/min) hydraulic flow. The 2-speed drive system reaches 17.4 mph (28 km/h). “It excels at transporting material on a site very quickly or on jobsites that are very vast,” Koolmees noted.
  • ATX960 (57 hp / 42.5 kW): The largest model boasts 3285 lb (1490.1 kg) rated operating capacity and 25 gpm (94.6 L/min) hydraulic flow, sharing the ATX850’s 2-speed drive system.

For longer working hours or during challenging weather conditions, Koolmees noted, “Optional air-conditioned and heated cabs are offered for the ATX850 and ATX960 models, while heated cabs are also available for the ATX530 and ATX720. This allows operators to sit comfortably.”

Maximizing compact articulated loader productivity with attachments

The ATX line’s operational flexibility is fully realized through attachments. The design helps “expand the customer’s ability to do more work to be more productive without having to continue adding individual pieces of equipment to their fleet,” Koolmees explained.

Beyond common attachments like buckets and forks, the ATX line accepts a wide variety of approved attachments

  • Material handling: Grapples, brush grapples, forestry claws, pallet forks
  • Ground maintenance: Flail mowers, power rakes, rotary sweepers, levelers
  • Soil preparation: Rotary tillers, power harrows
  • Construction: Hydraulic breakers, cement mixers, dozer blades

Finding your turf-friendly landscaping equipment solution

Choosing the optimal compact articulated loader requires analyzing typical jobsites, materials handled and task variety. For hydraulic attachments in tight spaces, the ATX530’s capabilities might be ideal. For moving heavier loads quickly across larger areas, the ATX850 or ATX960 would be strong considerations.

Koolmees stressed the value of firsthand experience: “Seeing is believing experiencing the machines hands-on can be an extremely helpful tool and that’s something that our dealership network does an exceptional job of.”
