It’s a fact: Each one of your jobsites is different. Sure, the end goal might be the same, but the actual location and project is unique every time. So, because each jobsite is different, you need your drills to be versatile and configurable to your needs.
The Vermeer D23x30 S3 horizontal directional drill (HDD) is a versatile machine that’s designed to be configured to a variety of jobsites. If you’re looking to upgrade to a bigger drill but aren’t sure which model to go with, the benefits and options below can help you decide if the D23x30 S3 is the right drill for you.
Recent enhancements
First, let’s talk about some recent enhancements that have been made to the D23x30 S3. Through feedback from the field, several enhancements have been made to the horizontal directional drill to help extend the life of the motors and maximize its durability overall, including updates to the thrust motors and electrical harnesses.
“We’re making these enhancements to every D23x30 S3 that comes off the manufacturing line and also sending out field installation kits for the machines in the field,” explained Ben Downing, a project engineer at Vermeer.
These enhancements are several in a long line of innovations that Vermeer is constantly making to their products.
Drill comparisons
When it comes to versatility, one of the ways the D23x30 S3 earns this classification is by comparing it to the two machine sizes above and below it. For instance, the D20x22 S3 HDD is similar in size and weight to the D23x30 S3. However, the D23x30 S3 can also be configured to run like a larger drill with large diameter rods. You can drill like you would with a D24x40 S3, but with less thrust and pullback speed.
So, it has a small size like the model below it, but the capability of handling larger drill rods like the model above it. This will be important to keep in mind as we talk about the other two benefits below.
Transportability options
The size aspect of the D23x30 S3 becomes a benefit when you look into how you would transport it. Since its size is similar to a D20x22 S3, it can be more efficient to transport than a D24x40 S3.
“Operators that want to jump up to a D24x40 S3 drill but don’t want the expense of purchasing another truck or trailer could be a good fit for a D23x30 S3,” explained Tod Michael, a Vermeer product manager. “If you transport a D24x40 S3, you’ll most likely need tandem dual-wheels on each axle of the truck or trailer, which can be a significantly higher cost.”
This ease of transportation gives you the benefit of upgrading your directional drill without having to upgrade your truck to haul it. A D23x30 S3 can be hauled side-by-side with a mixer on a trailer.
Drill rod capabilities
When it comes to drill rod options on the D23x30 S3, you can configure it how you want to.
“You can use larger diameter rods and drill like you would with a D24x40 S3, or you can use smaller diameter rods and drill like you would with a D20x22 S3, but with more power,” said Michael. “At the same time, the mud pump on the D23x30 S3 is more suited to the mud that you use with larger drills, allowing you to drill that longer distance.”
The versatility of drill rods the machine can handle allows you to use the machine on a variety of jobsites. With the D23x30 S3, you can handle the larger diameter work and tough ground conditions.
