Personal protective equipment for solar installation — PPE for pile drivers

The solar industry is rapidly expanding across the globe, with new solar farms being constructed every day. Pile drivers play an important role during construction. In some cases, thousands of piles need to be driven on a single project before racking and solar panels can be mounted. To do the work efficiently, you need a skilled crew; quality equipment like Vermeer PD5, PD5R, PD10 and PD10R pile drivers; and a safety plan that includes the proper personal protective equipment (PPE). Here is an overview of PPE everyone should wear when working on a jobsite that involves using a pile driver. Consult your machine’s operator’s manual for safety messages and further instructions.

What to wear: pile driver PPE checklist

Start by making sure everyone working around pile drivers on the jobsite understands what they should be wearing, including but not limited to the PPE listed below:

  • Hearing protectors — Noise exposure requires serious consideration when working near a pile driver. To determine the level of hearing protection your work environment requires, enlist the help of your local environmental noise specialist.
  • Eye protection — Safety glasses or goggles that wrap around your eyes offer protection.
  • Hard hat — Hard hats should be worn for protection.
  • Safety shoes — Safety shoes or boots with toe guards and metatarsal guards must follow national or regional standards.
  • Close-fitting, reflective clothing — Wear close-fitting clothing and confine long hair, and reflective clothing is required for those working near traffic.

What NOT to wear

In addition to the PPE you should wear when working around pile drivers, your safety plan should include personal items to avoid, including but not limited to:

  • Jewelry — Rings, necklaces, wristwatches, and bracelets.
  • Loose-fitting clothing — Close-fitting clothing should be worn.
  • Long hair — You don’t need to cut it off, but you do need to make sure it’s confined.

As quickly as the solar industry is growing, chances are you will come in contact with a lot of new faces when working around the pile drivers. Remember, safety is everyone’s responsibility, so if you see the new employee not wearing the proper personal protective equipment, or you see them wearing something they shouldn’t, say something. Being part of a team means ensuring everyone is informed and following the safety plan.

When operating a pile driver, always check the operator’s manual for PPE and safety messages unique to the model being operated. For additional information about the Vermeer pile drivers and PPE requirements, contact your local Vermeer dealer.
