Vermeer AutoTension feature advances intersect bore efficiency

On long, large-diameter horizontal directional drilling (HDD) projects, it’s becoming increasingly common to use two drill rigs — one on each side of the bore. Vermeer has now introduced AutoTension for its D220x500 S3 HDD and D550 HDD, a feature that significantly enhances the way these machines work together on intersect bores.

AutoTension streamlines complex HDD operations

“The HDD industry is witnessing a growing trend of employing a drill rig on each side of a large diameter or long bore,” explained Marv Klein, application specialist for Vermeer. “With Vermeer AutoTension on the D220x500 S3 and D550, crews on the entry and exit side of the bore can work together while reaming and swabbing a bore hole. This leads to more efficient and accurate reamer passes without the need for a mechanical locking swivel or breakout tongs for rod handling.”

Enhanced operational efficiency

The AutoTension feature, engaged from the control station, maintains consistent tension on the tail string throughout the drilling process. This innovative system allows temporary disengagement when necessary — such as during rod additions or removals — without having to pause operations. The flexibility extends to directional changes, enabling the driving machine to switch between pushing and pulling without requiring action from the exit-side operator.

“Crews have been using mechanical swivels for years to accomplish similar tasks,” Klein said. “From our perspective, it was important to develop a solution that integrates this functionality directly into the drill system. This approach aims to minimize the need for some mechanical swivels and enhance overall efficiency.”

Enhancing maxi rig capabilities

The development of AutoTension represents a significant advancement in maxi rig drill technology. Klein explained, “When we design products, our goal is always to provide solutions that improve efficiency and productivity on any project or job.” The feature optimizes reamer penetration through consistent tension application and improves positioning and control of the reamer within the bore hole. Moreover, AutoTension helps maintain the intended bore path and helps prevent potential complications during the drilling process.

Safety and versatility in design

Safety remains a priority with the AutoTension feature, which includes a lack of operator presence system. When the AutoTension operator leaves the seat, certain controls are locked out and an audible alert sounds at the AutoTension machine. The system’s versatility allows contractors to match different Vermeer HDDs with the D220x500 S3 or D550 using AutoTension.

Advancing maxi rig drill operations

For contractors looking to maximize their efficiency in large-diameter and long-distance bores, the Vermeer AutoTension feature provides a sophisticated solution that streamlines operations, helps improve fluid management and enhances overall project efficiency.
