A new era of Vermeer drilling: The next generation of horizontal directional drills

A graphic that says redesigned for what's next

Vermeer, a pioneer of the horizontal directional drill (HDD) industry, is developing innovative technology and machines with enhanced reliability to support the future of HDD. The next generation of Vermeer HDDs are built on everything that makes Vermeer the HDD market leader — bringing durability, reliability and ease of use to the jobsite.

Engineered to adapt to a changing industry, the next generation of HDDs enable crews of various skill levels to maximize productivity. Outfitted with telematics and advanced onboard technology, Vermeer HDDs are designed with your feedback in mind.

Next generation drills deliver enhanced reliability and productivity advantage

The next generation lineup offers increased dependability with enhanced hydraulics, electrical design and powertrain systems.

“Next generation Vermeer drills have taken hydraulic protection components usually only used on pipeline rigs and brought them into utility drills to help increase the life and reliability of the hydraulic circuit” said Clint Recker, Vermeer Utility product manager.

It’s not just talk about reliability, it’s proven. The upcoming next generation drill will be backed by an industry-leading 3-year, 3,000-hour Vermeer Confidence Plus® asset protection program.

“We are proud of the work we put into delivering enhanced reliability of our next generation drill and what that means for our customers. We are putting that confidence into providing the industry with the first 3 year, 3,000-hour Vermeer Confidence Plus® program, with the aim of giving our customers peace of mind,” said Lee Schroeder, Vermeer product support manager.

On-rig diagnostics help increase jobsite uptime for drilling crews

Intelligent on-rig diagnostics unlock the ability to troubleshoot your equipment. Specific diagnostic information and troubleshooting steps help crews get back to drilling without a dealer service tool.

On the jobsite, every minute counts. On-rig diagnostics help increase uptime so you can get more product in the ground every day. By providing your operator with the power to troubleshoot, you can spend more of your workday drilling.

“With the demands of drilling production needed today, we take uptime seriously. We want to enable our customers to have visibility to their machine’s performance and provide prescriptive steps, if an issue arises,” said Jake Rewerts, Vermeer field service engineer.

Next-level features bring ease of use to drill operators

Next generation HDDs are equipped with cutting-edge features to ease the workload of your crew and boost your business confidence. Upcoming HDDs boast features like automated rod exchange (ARE), a sliding open-side vise and an optional larger rodbox to reduce your operator workload.

Automated rod exchange lets operators automate the rod change out process in one button push, eliminating up to 13 steps for each rod exchange. Automated rod exchange decreases operator training time, simplifies the rod exchange process and provides consistency in drilling.

A patented sliding open-side vise gives operators visibility to the rod joint. The vice maximizes efficiency by minimizing the number of steps in the rod change out process and providing easier access to clean or replace vise dies.

Optional class-leading rod capacity gives you the capability to bore farther without getting off the machine to add a rod or change out boxes. The option to add a larger rodbox can increase total footage installed per day, potentially alleviating operational costs by minimizing time spent loading rodboxes.

Built on the strong foundation of the past, Vermeer is moving into the future with the next generation of horizontal directional drills. Added technology and machine refinements can help relieve jobsite frustrations to help you grow your business.

“These drills are what our customers have been asking for,” Recker said. “They pair reliability and productivity with dealer support.”
