Vermeer introduces the PD25R pile driver, designed to tackle the growing demands of utility-scale solar construction. Before launching the machine, Vermeer invited AZCO, a Burns & McDonnell company, an industry leader in solar construction, to put the PD25R through intensive field demonstrations on actual jobsites. The results showed significant advancements in deployment speed, operational efficiency and versatility across ground conditions.
Quick deployment
The Vermeer PD25R features an innovative design with a telescoping mast and rotating upper structure that transforms jobsite deployment of pile drivers. By simply laying down the mast and rotating the upper half, the machine quickly transitions from transport to operating mode.
“We can drive straight off a truck and get ready to work without any assembly time. The machine is up and running quickly,” said AZCO Section Manager Paul Owens.
This design eliminates time-consuming assembly and disassembly processes.
Efficient operation
The PD25R’s optional automated features streamline the pile driving process through advanced GPS integration and automated positioning.
“The PD25R’s automation allows it to move from one pile to the next with minimal motion. It goes straight there,” Owens noted. “We tested experienced and brand-new operators who had never done pile driving. We saw comparable results quickly from both groups.”
The PD25R’s automated features and user-friendly controls enhance installation precision and ease operator training, addressing industry workforce challenges.
Powerful performance
The PD25R new hammer design with downward pressure proved particularly effective across varying ground conditions.
“We tested the machine in soft conditions and areas with shale and hard clay,” Owens explained. “In soft, sandy soil, the sensors in the mast allowed us to control downward pressure stop precisely at the correct elevation — a typically tricky task in soft soils. What impressed me was its performance in the shale and hard clay areas, where we saw minimal damage on the top of piles, even on longer drive times due to the tough soil conditions.
Versatility across conditions
The machine demonstrated impressive adaptability across different terrains and pile specifications.
“The ability to handle both a 25-ft (7.6-m) pile and a smaller pile with the same piece of equipment is phenomenal,” Owens shared. “It means you need less equipment onsite — you can use one universal machine.”
Advancing solar construction
From rapid deployment and automated operation to exceptional performance across diverse terrains, the PD25R delivers the advancements in pile driving technology that the solar construction industry requires.
