Eight minutes to fell a 60-foot pine: How Walnut Tree Service masters efficient tree removal

“At Walnut Tree, my heart is all about production. We can bring down a tree in five to eight minutes,” said Michael Gomes, owner of Walnut Tree Service, watching as his crew efficiently dismantled a massive pine that would take competitors much longer to process. This focus on speed and efficiency is why homeowners and contractors across Stoughton, Massachusetts and throughout Boston’s South Shore region trust Walnut Tree Service with their toughest jobs.

Since founding the company, Gomes has steadily grown from a single crew to managing 3 – 4 teams in just over 12 years. His leadership style emphasizes both operational excellence and strong values, creating a workplace culture that employees and customers trust. As both owner and certified tree worker, Gomes maintains a hands-on role — actively climbing trees and operating cranes alongside his team rather than managing from a distance.

Advanced equipment drives remarkable efficiency

Behind this impressive speed and growth lies a strategic investment in professional tree care equipment

“I own 20 Vermeer machines,” said Gomes. “Vermeer is the best. They stand behind their word. They give me very good support.” This dedication to quality equipment has maximized the company’s productivity.

Walnut Tree Service’s equipment fleet is tailored to its operations. For brush chippers, they utilize the BC2100XL and AX17 brush chippers. For processing whole trees onsite, they depend on the WC2300XL and WC2500XL. They employ CTX160 mini skid steers to haul material to their chippers and trucks. To remove stumps afterwards, they use an SC70TX stump cutter. Back at their yard, they have a HG6800TX horizontal grinder for processing incoming material that wasn’t processed onsite.

This equipment enables crews to remove 7 – 8 pines per hour using advanced techniques, including crane operations to move material over houses. Working across multiple job sites simultaneously, they complete 3 – 4 jobs daily.

Safety and training focus

Despite their impressive speed, Walnut Tree Service never compromises on safety. Every team member uses proper PPE and follows strict safety protocols. Machine features such as the patented Vermeer bottom feed stop bar on brush chippers to automatic cutting wheel shutoffs on Vermeer stump cutters were designed with safety in mind.

The Vermeer All Roads team reinforces this commitment through regular inspections and rapid support, with dealer sales representatives visiting job sites several times a month. This hands-on relationship enables crews to work both efficiently.

Partnership that powers performance

“Vermeer is the best,” Gomes stated with conviction. “I’ve seen it all. I’ve seen all kinds of chippers, I’ve seen everything. Nothing can beat Vermeer.”

The Vermeer equipment that powers Walnut Tree Service has proven critical to their success, allowing them to complete jobs with extraordinary speed and precision while maintaining their five-star service rating
