Boost fiber install efficiency: A look at the new Vermeer MTR516 microtrencher attachment

MTR516 in action

Installing fiber optics, especially in busy urban areas, presents a unique set of challenges. Contractors need equipment that not only cuts quickly and precisely but also helps minimize disruption and reduces the amount of site cleanup and restoration work. The new Vermeer MTR516 microtrencher attachment is engineered to meet these demands head-on, helping your crew install fiber efficiently and leave a cleaner jobsite.

This attachment, compatible with Vermeer RTX550 and RTX750 ride-on tractors, is designed to cut trenches up to 17 in (43.2 cm) deep. The MTR516 microtrencher focuses on delivering a clean, precise cut while helping to reduce impact on surrounding property and infrastructure — a critical factor for urban projects.

“Contractors need to get fiber in the ground fast and keep the jobsite clean, and the MTR516 microtrencher is built for that,” said Nick Olsen, product manager at Vermeer. “We’ve packed it with features that directly impact cutting performance and jobsite cleanliness, all backed by the reliable service and support our customers expect from their local Vermeer dealer.”

So, what makes the MTR516 microtrencher attachment a practical tool for your fiber optic installation projects? Let’s break down some key features.

Cleaner cuts and reduced cleanup

One of the standout aspects of the MTR516 microtrencher attachment is its focus on jobsite cleanliness.

  • It features a fully shrouded cutting wheel that covers the blade during operation. This design effectively contains debris and optimizes vacuum suction.

What is the direct benefit for your crew? A cleaner jobsite and reduced cleanup timecan help save time on a project.

Durability for consistent performance

Microtrenching can encounter varied and sometimes tough ground conditions.

  • The MTR516 microtrencher’s durable construction provides operational stability, maintaining a consistent cut even when dealing with rough ground or conditions like cobble.
  • This robust build means the attachment is ready for demanding jobsites, helping you maintain performance day in and day out.

Designed for maximum uptime

Minimizing downtime is crucial for any contractor. The MTR516 microtrencher is designed with straightforward serviceability in mind:

  • Replaceable spoil outlet: Compatible with 4-in or 6-in (10.2-cm or 15.2-cm) vac hoses, it can be efficiently swapped out in the field.
  • Field-serviceable wear plates: Multiple bolt-in wear plates can be serviced directly on the jobsite.
  • Cutter wheel access: A dual-hinged access panel allows for quick blade servicing and replacement. These features help reduce trips to the shop and keep your crews productive.

Versatile cutting for diverse applications

The MTR516 microtrencher offers flexibility to handle a range of job requirements:

  • Cutting dimensions: Handles trenches from 1 in to 2 in (2.5 cm to 5 cm) wide and down to 17 in (43.2 cm) deep.
  • Tooling options: Contractors can choose wheel options with welded polycrystalline diamond cutter (PDC) teeth for fast, clean cuts in asphalt, or rotary carbide teeth effective in concrete and rock.
  • Offset capability: The attachment can be offset up to 24 in (61 cm) to the right, helping simplify cuts next to curbs.
  • Simplified operation: Features like single-lever depth control make operation simple, and the design optimizes airflow for spoil discharge across all cutting depths, meaning less spoil left behind.

A practical solution for fiber expansion

For contractors focused on expanding fiber optic networks, the MTR516 microtrencher attachment offers a practical approach. Creating a narrow, shallow trench leads to less cutting and may require less backfill material. This targeted approach can significantly streamline the installation process.
