Finding the right HDD reamer for unstable soil conditions has never been simple.
Utility and telecom crews rarely get the luxury of perfect ground intelligence. One bore might start in clay, move into sand and finish somewhere in between.
That reality is exactly why Vermeer expanded its HDD tooling lineup with the MPHD reamer — a mixer packer hydro delivery design developed to help crews stay productive when the soil condition changes without warning.
Rather than forcing operators to choose between a pure mixer or a pure packer, the MPHD brings both actions into one compact solution.
“It’s a little bit of a hybrid,” said Cody Mecham, product manager for Vermeer Cutting Edge. “The front end of the reamer mixes and the rear end does a little bit of packing.”
It’s a reamer designed for the unpredictability of how utility HDD work gets done.
Reinforced where drill reamers take the most abuse
Durability isn’t optional when you’re pulling through abrasive or shifting ground. It was a main factor in creating the MPHD reamer.
Particularly with the front mixer bars.
“That’s where the packing and a lot of the soil ends up as you pull through,” Mecham said. “Then that weld could wear off and the mixers could either break off or need rebuilt.”
MPHD was built to help eliminate that concern.

It addresses this concern by using a one-piece mixer bar that runs from front to back and returns to the through-shaft.
“Even if that weld wears out, that bar is still attached,” Mecham says.
The bar material and hardfacing protect the weld and mitigate wear.
What does that mean for HDD operators? Fewer rebuilds, less downtime changing out tooling and a drill reamer that keeps working as wear sets in.
This robust design supports productivity across changing soil conditions, helping crews stay focused on getting the job done instead of fixing tooling.
Push and pull control when the hole won’t hold in unstable soil
Push and pull ability becomes critical when ground conditions won’t hold. MPHD was engineered to give operators confidence in both directions of the bore, especially when maintaining hole integrity is essential.
“The mixer bar coming down on the backside gives us good pushback ability, should the customer need it,” Mecham said.
That capability matters when the difference between a clean pullback and a reshoot comes down to control. MPHD balances mixing action up front with controlled packing in the rear to help stabilize the bore as product is installed.
For crews working in variable soil conditions, that hybrid approach helps keep holes open without sacrificing cutting performance — a practical solution built for real‑world HDD work.
Smarter fluid delivery for changing soil conditions
Drilling fluid plays a major role in holding a bore together because of how it impacts the pressure of the hole, according to the Trenchless Technology article, Managing Downhole Pressures in Horizontal Directional Drilling.
The MPHD takes a similar approach to the Vermeer Mix Master™ HD (MXHD) reamer with a unique directional fluid flow.
Hydro delivery is integrated directly into the mixing bars instead of pushing fluid out through the shaft. The result: more controlled fluid placement aimed directly at the cutters, not blasted outward into the formation.
“That helps keep our cutters clean and it helps [prevent] deformation of the hole because we’re not spraying water directly out of the reamer into the formation,” Mecham said.
Fluid placement matters when trying to preserve the bore you just created. The wrong placement can have a major impact on the jobsite.
“It’s like power washing a pile of dirt — the more you do it, the less material you’re going to have,” Mecham said.
By redirecting fluid fore and aft versus just out, MPHD minimizes that power washing effect. Instead, it helps operators manage soil conditions more effectively, minimizing washouts and keeping cutters clean. For crews running an HDD reamer in unstable soil, that helps with fewer lost holes and more consistent pullbacks.
See where the MPHD fits in your tooling lineup
MPHD expands the offerings of the Vermeer HDD tooling lineup for operators who need versatile reamers that are built to last.
“They’re convenient to have on the truck because they’re easy to handle and work well in a combination of ground conditions,” Mecham said.
If your work puts you in unpredictable soil conditions, this drill reamer delivers the durability and control needed to help stay productive.
